Introducing: Peter Shaw-McMinn, O.D.

An Old Fashioned Country Doctor

Sun City Vision Clinic Optometry is very pleased to introduce Dr. Peter Shaw-McMinn to you. Dr. Shaw-McMinn comes to us from the faculty of the Southern California College of Optometry, where he remains an Assistant Professor. Prior to that, he examined patients in the Fort Ord Silas B. Hayes Army Hospital, March Air Force Base Hospital, and Loma Linda Ophthalmology Group. Dr. Shaw-McMinn has practiced in Sun City for 27 years, longer than any other eye doctor! He specializes in visual perceptual therapy for dyslexia, contact lenses and geriatric vision care. When not examining patients, Dr. Shaw-McMinn lectures throughout the United States and has been interviewed for articles in magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, Women's Day, First for Women, Black Enterprise, and Fitness. He has appeared on television news stations throughout the United States.

Dr. Shaw-McMinn has taught visual therapy, contact lenses and patient management at the Southern California College of Optometry since 1978. He is presently appointed the honor of the "Benedict Professor", an endowed chair at the University of Houston. He has conducted research and written numerous papers on vision and learning including; "A Multidisciplinary Approach to Children with Learning Disabilities," and "The Incidence of Visual Deficiencies in Children Achieving Below Their Expected Potential." Besides publishing many articles, he has co-authored several textbooks, the most recent of which is "Diagnosis and Management of Computer-Related Vision Disorders".

Professional affiliations include the Association of Optometric Educators, College of Optometrists in Visual Development, American Optometric Association, California Optometric Association, Association of Practice Management Educators, Optometric Extension Program, the Inland Empire Optometric Society, American Public Health Association, and the Southern California College of Optometry Faculty Council. On the personal side, Peter was raised in nearby Compton by an Irish Urologist and Bolivian nurse. Following his graduation from Dominguez High School, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern California (USC). He received his Doctorate degree from the Southern California College of Optometry, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He was awarded the George Deane Memorial Award for outstanding leadership and the Al Dennis Award for outstanding achievements and service to the profession of optometry. Dr. Shaw-McMinn was chosen as to "Outstanding Young Men of America", a tribute to young men for professional achievement and exceptional service. He has been nominated to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities several times. Peter lives in Woodcrest where he enjoys spending time with his wife Mary and their four children. He states, "My wealth is in my children. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to watch them grow, watch them learn new things about the world around them, and to feel their love and affection." Among their favorite activities is golf, tennis, and gardening.

When asked why he became an eye doctor, he remarked, "My dream has always been to be an `Old Fashioned Country Doctor' who spends time with his patients, and to be a part of their family as they mature. I had always planned to be a medical doctor like my father. But I realized that helping people succeed in life would be more meaningful than taking out gall bladders. So far I've been right! Whereas most doctors spend 10 minutes with a patient, as an Optometrist I can spend time to get to know their individual needs. By improving one's vision, you can improve their life at work, in school, in sports, recreation and at home. Optometry is the one profession allowing me to become that `Old-Fashioned Country Doctor' who still makes house calls."

The staff at Sun City Vision Clinic Optometry believe they are fortunate to have a Doctor who feels this way. We hope you take the opportunity to benefit from his expertise too!
